McTeacher’s Night
McDonald’s has graciously offered Oct. 4th as our CRE event night. This will be a CRE fundraiser where we get to keep a percentage of total funds brought in between 4:00-8:00 p.m. Please partner with me in welcoming our CRE families to the event. This is a great opportunity for one on one time with kids and parents. I have so many interactions from McTeacher Night events that have help to solidify the home to school connection. I appreciate everyone’s willingness to give an hour of your evening to help make this a WIN WIN for our school. The sign up sheet is posted on the lounge door. Thanks in advance!

Bucket Fillers

Dian Burge was proctoring the halls well during 3rd grade NWEA testing. She was addressing issues that came up immediately and protecting the testing standards that were in place for all learners. Thank you Dian for assuming roles that go beyond intervention and actively participating in the overall vision for learning here at CRE. #hereoesintraining

Shannon Juett squeezes as much out of a work day at CRE as she can. She takes a free moment to update her schedule and then graciously transitions back to meeting student needs. Shannon’s experience and work ethic shine in the school environment.

Nicole Hopper is in the zone with students but takes a break every now and then to reflect with humor. I recognize her skill set in dealing with challenging situations and how she manages student needs while showing them mutual respect and valuing their input. Mrs. Hopper is masterful at her craft!

Tiffany Hull has hit the ground running and her years of experience in the classroom are showing. Her instructional language with students and team members is spot on. She manages her class beautifully and appropriately for their learning needs. It is a treat to observe her in action.

Ms. Brummel was well into the swing of things last week while hosting small group instruction in Math. Intervention is a priority for Ms. Brummel and with the upswing in math expectations for 3rd graders I am sure they welcomed the extra support. Ms. Brummel can serve as a go to for CIM structures that support learners that may need extended learning opportunities.

I am thankful, grateful, and blessed to work with each of you as we work to serve the families and students of CRE. The days get wild, business has to be done, and we ride the waves of joy and opportunity together. We have the opportunity to refuel, fill up on family, create memories and return to GIVE some more. I am in awe of the good work that is done here at CRE each day. It is evident in the daily interactions, the profound learning opportunities, and most of all in the depth to which you KNOW your children and their needs.  I hope each of you know you are valued, appreciated, and at the heart of our #CREFamily!  #aimhighCRE

Happy Mursday Day: We can do anything for two days, friends.

Feel free to enjoy jeans tomorrow as we begin our Thanksgiving Break.

Artisan Teaching Themes

– Practice: Practice – The ability of the teacher to improve recall and application of learning through effective rehearsal, repeated effort, drill, repetition, study, and review. The joke goes, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” The punch line is, “Practice, Practice, Practice.”

Great teaching is not simply the presentation of new material in an interesting, relevant manner. It involves designing quality experiences for students such that, as they engage in the experiences, they work out their mastery of the curriculum. Call it repetition, drill, rehearsal, review, study or practice. By any name, a key effect of practice is that knowledge and skills become established in long term memory so that recall and application can occur in the future. Success principles for practice:  Keep practice sessions short so focus and intensity can remain high.

The key to productive practice is focus, intention, motivation, and intensity, not just the amount of practice or the length of time one practices. Practice small chunks, then, move to larger combinations. Human short term memory has limited capacity and practice sessions are more productive when the amount of material to be practiced is limited.  Attend to energy and motivation needs during practice. Practice requires energy. Focused, intense practice requires even more energy.  Provide knowledgeable feedback during practice. Practice sessions are most productive when students are provided abundant, immediate and specific feedback on their work.  Move quickly to more elaborative practice. It is easier to remember items if we know more about them, beyond their definition, spelling, or representation.

The more students can make connections among ideas and concepts and associate them with other items from prior learning and experience, the more likely they are to be remembered and applied.  Conduct practice in the visual, spatial, and cognitive domains. Recall is enhanced when students are asked to engage using both internal (cognitive) and external (visual and spatial) processing methodologies.  Distributive practice sessions across time. Recall is enhanced when the brain has an opportunity to consolidate memories before adding new ones.  Design the difficulty of the practice to be challenging, but attainable. Motivation to engage in practice is weak if the task to be practiced is viewed as too easy or too hard.

Faculty Meeting

As a reminder we have a faculty meeting scheduled for Dec. 8th Breakfast will begin at 7:00 and meeting will begin at 7:15. See you then!

CRE Family News

We are going to sponsor four families for Christmas Assistance for the district on behalf of CRE. We are adopting one family per hallway. If anyone is interested in shopping for the families, please let me know. All items are due to the social work office between Dec. 1st- 7th. #aimhighCRE

Grants

I just putting a plug in for Open Learning Spaces/21st Century Classrooms as you consider grant writing and classroom needs. I realize this may not be of interest to everyone but this is an area I have plans of exploring as we consider forward movement with preparing our classrooms to meet the needs of our students. If you are interested in having a conversation and sharing some thoughts on the topic related to: creative spaces, tables, standing stations, etc., let me know when you would like to meet.

Marta Nangle came to the rescue this morning for car duty. She is a team player and intentionally puts herself in a place to help and support the needs of our building. I appreciate your desire to serve, Marta!

Nancy Brashers sure knows how to keep a smile and a sense of humor even when facing challenges each day. She gives grace without fail for students struggling to make appropriate choices. Her students know consistency, fairness, hard work, and learner expectations. Thank you for the effort you pour into each day for your kids!

Jacki Miller has really dug in this year to set the stage of success for all her students. It is evident that she is flexible and unwavering when it comes to understanding the needs of her students. The level of engagement and consistent learner expectations is a driving force for student success in her classroom.

January 19, 2015

We will be meeting for a Faculty Meeting tomorrow: Breakfast is at 7:00, meeting begins at 7:15. See you bright and early!
Building Evacuation Follow Up: Today’s evacuation was the result of a visiting, non school age, child pulling the alarm. Good News is we will count this as our follow up drill since we had some technical difficulties last week. We need to focus on the following areas for improvement: student voice level during evacuation, seriousness of the need to listen and follow directions, and speed. You may want to host a lesson with your class on expectations and practice appropriate building evacuation procedures. Thank you for your attention to this safety concern.
CRE Family News:
I am a little behind times but wanted to share that Miss Yocum has finally escaped the cloud of pneumonia. She begins training for a half marathon today. She has also been dealing with a tumor on her arm for the last year, she is now tumor free and ready to embrace 2015 with better health.
I talked to Grandma Cathy this morning. She is home and doing well, she returns to the doctor on Wed and will keep us posted with her recovery. She will be home this week regaining her strength and tentatively plans to return next week. She can certainly feel the love from CRE, so keep it coming. We are her family!
Mrs. Mitchell is back with us today! Let us know how we can help you ease back in… #crefamily
Intervention: Please be mindful of intervention schedules related to your specific students. We all live by the minute during the school day and services are built upon one another. Intervention students need to be sent to interventionist at their scheduled time. Also remember, intervention is for students who are not performing on grade level so grade level work would not be appropriate during the intervention time or independently without support.
Bucket Fillers:
” Nurse Terry is so good with the kids who need a little extra attention and nudge in the right direction. He has innate sense of when to help.”
Nancy Brashers continues to share her talents with CRE. She saw the need to simplify the PDC process so she created a PDC website for CRE. It may become a district resource at some point but she invested in an area that has been in need of clarity. Way to go, Nancy!

Bucket Fillers: Melissa Harris and Kendra McCormick so willingly take the reigns for me when I have to be absent. With the guarantee of the unknown each day, I greatly appreciate their leadership. #crestrong

Tricia Clark has really embraced the role of a para by learning to balance student support, family support, and teaching independence. Thank you, Tricia, for sharing your talents with our CRE Family.

Nancy Dygert is the QUEEN of positivity. While she is in a pinch with balancing her husband’s health needs, a busy winter schedule, and concert week she still shows up with a gracious heart and her “sing song” voice. I want to be just like Nancy when I grow up 🙂

Pam Hazell and Pam Grisham really do a great job of picking up on the needs of our CRE Family! They meet daily to pray for our students, school families, and our staff. I am grateful for the peace that this brings to me, personally. #crestrong

Debbie Thomas may not know what to do after the 12 days of Christmas are over. Someone be sure and check on her during break. I would love to see her closet at home or her craft room. Debbie certainly pours into our school climate and fills the buckets of others with her joy for the season. You are loved, Debbie.

Instructional Spotlight:

Melissa taught a theme vs. message lesson this morning.  Her mentor text was very rich literature (Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters).  She stopped at strategies places to ask the students questions and stopped to quickly define unknown vocabulary words as needed.

As you can see in the picture, Melissa’s anchor chart is very explicit with only words that will be beneficial to the students.

It was a great lesson!

PTO Spirit Wear Sale:

At the beginning of December, PTO will have a spirit wear sale which will be advertised on the PTO Facebook page. Spirit wear is available at Buchanan Intermediate in the PTO room.

Additional Families Still Need Adopted for Christmas Assistance:

The social work office has matched ¾ of their families with community/school partners. However, there are still families available to adopt. If interested, please contact the social work office at 336-1854.

CRE is hosting be a “CHANGEMAKER!” Jan Dongarra has recruited over $150 in outside donations already and our parents have been generous in our efforts to host a family in need for Christmas. When all change is counted I will let you know how many children CRE is sponsoring. I will need some shopping helpers at the end of next week!!! #crestrong

Attendance Focus:

Please continue to emphasize the importance of good hand washing to your students. The flu and other illnesses have started already this year and children are the #1 carriers of such conditions.

Artisan Teaching Theme Update: December

Connection – The ability of the teacher to establish a mental link between the intended learning and past learning experiences.

Connection is perhaps the single theme that is most directly aimed at how the human brain naturally learns.  The brain is constantly seeking to connect things, to look for patterns, to see similarities, and to form familiar categories.  Whenever we encounter something new, it is natural for us to think of the past knowledge or experience that is similar.

Teachers who recognize this natural process, and capitalize on it, are teaching in a way that is congruent to the brain’s innate tendencies.  Example…. In the movie the Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi used connection when he taught Daniel.  Wax on … wax off.  Mr. Miyagi used those movements as a connection to block incoming punches.

Tips for making connections:

  • The connection must      first exist in the mind of the learner.  It is a good idea for the teacher to      first provide the knowledge experience to be connected to and then execute      the connection.
  • The connection should be      made actively.       Each individual student should engage in the connection, not just      watch as other students participate.
  • Watch for, and test for,      misconceptions.       Since connection is an invisible process, the teacher can only hope      that the right links are being made.       It is best to assume that there will be misconceptions and to      predict where they are most likely to occur.

Practice – The ability of the teacher to improve recall and application of learning through effective rehearsal, repeated effort, drill, repetition, study, and review.

The joke goes, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”  The punch line is, “Practice, Practice, Practice.”  Great teaching is not simply the presentation of new material in an interesting, relevant manner.  It involves designing quality experiences for students such that, as they engage in the experiences, they work out their mastery of the curriculum.

December Faculty Meeting: We will meet for breakfast at 7:00 and our meeting will begin at 7:15 on Dec. 16th. See you all bright and early!

Bucket Fillers: Michelle Brown is our resident CELEBRITY this week. She is going to share a live GR+ lesson via Skype. This lesson will broadcast nationwide and serve as a model of learning for other Literacy coaches and Interventionists. Linda Dorn will be leading the discussion for learning with Mrs. Brown’s lesson as the focus. Be sure you ask Mrs. Brown for her autograph in passing this week. She has certainly put her SIGNATURE on CRE. #crestrong

Artisan Teacher Monthly Guide

September

Clear Learning Goals – The ability of the teacher to identify and precisely express what students will know and be able to do as a result of a lesson.

  • content clarity – the      content you want (knowledge) students to take away from a specific lesson      and is always expressed as a noun in the learning goal
  • performance clarity – the action or ability a student should be able to      execute after a lesson and is always expressed as a verb in the learning      goal

Teachers that place Clear Learning Goals on the board for students are visually showing pupils what they should be able to do after a lesson.  Teachers can reiterate these goals at any time during a lesson to bring students back to the essential learning that is expected.  If this is a practice you already do, analyze your goals to be sure you have content and performance clarity.  If this is something that you are not currently doing, select a subject and try it out.

Congruency – The ability of the teacher to design classroom activities that are accurately matched to clear learning goals.

  • Congruency      is linked to, and dependent upon, clear learning goals.
  • Congruency      means to match or align with something.       Congruent things must have a target or another thing to which they      are an exact match.
  • Congruent      instructional activities cannot exist apart from a clear learning goal.

According to John Carroll whose 1963 book, A Model for School and Learning wrote the learner will succeed in learning a given task to the extent that he spends the amount of time he needs to learn the task (Carroll, 1963, p. 725). Covey reiterates that most approaches to time management involve a clarification of one’s goals, then a detailed plan designed to accomplish the goals (Covey, 1989).  Once a clear learning goal is established, congruency speaks to the ability of the teacher to match classroom resources and approaches to the goal.  First, determine learning goals.  Then, choose the activities that serve the goals.

The September First PLACE! Trait of the Month is: Respect – treating others with courtesy and honor.

Cookie Dough Assembly – Thursday, September 4th:

We will meet as an entire school at 2:00 in the gym for our annual cookie dough assembly. The assembly should last approximately 15 minutes or so. Thank you in advance for encouraging students to participate in our only school fundraiser for the year.

Watch Dogs Kickoff – September 15 @ BHS – Volunteers needed:

Staff, we are needing some volunteers to help during the Watch Dogs event at the high school on Monday, September 15 from 5:30-7:30. Please communicate with Pam Grisham to sign up. If you choose to volunteer that evening to help at the event you are welcome to wear jeans that day at school. We will feed you pizza at the HS as well.

NWEA Testing:

As discussed during PLC on Friday: We will begin NWEA Testing tomorrow 9/3/14 . This is a great opportunity to re-acclimate our students to the importance of computerized testing. It will be good practice for our 3rd grade students who will participate in online state assessments later this spring. Thank you for attending to the expectations to prepare students well for their NWEA testing sessions for both Math and Reading. As we move through the first sessions of testing we will share pertinent information regarding the new web based system.

Faculty Meeting – Tuesday, September 16th at 7:15. Breakfast will be served at 7:00. If you have pertinent information you would like included in the Sept. Meeting agenda, please forward to Mrs. Thompson or myself.

Our first faculty meeting will be discussing our PST process as we continue to streamline and make it more effective for our students. Time permitting, I am hopeful to introduce our next Artisan Teacher Theme as well.

Teacher Web Pages

Faculty, don’t forget that all teachers need to maintain a class web page this year on our new web site. The expectation for faculty web pages is…school contact info, monthly newsletter, and site is updated at least once a month.

Bucket Fillers:

Marty has a nose for identifying a hot spot related to drop off safety. I appreciate his initiative to call my attention to it and seek a resolution. He is a treasured team member that keeps us #crestrong.

Kelly Jenkins was here bright and early to assist with planning for the day for our Sped team. I appreciated her presence and problem solving action to assist during a time of need.

We are in the beginning phases of planning for the 2014 Relay for Life event. We will gear up for fundraising and encourage anyone interested or affected in anyway by CANCER to join us in our efforts to celebrate, remember, and honor everyone who has been touched by this disease. We have a strong Branson Pirates Team, but seek to share this life-changing experience with our CRE Family. I have found, personally, this is a great way to give back and come together for something that is so prevalent in our everyday lives. I join and participate now to honor my dad who lost his fight Nov. 4th, 2009. My team supported him and our family through his illness and now honors his memory each year. I am forever grateful!!!

We have enrolled several families this week and you may have had a student added to your roster. We have been trying to meet with families more consistently as they enroll and will communicate any necessary information with you as we receive it.
Bucket Fillers: Mrs. Thompson,  Mr. Swearingen, and Mrs. Hazell are great support in parent meetings when things go “off track.” I appreciate their individual areas of expertise and professionalism when the going gets tough. Couldn’t ask for a better team!
April Mulnik hung out late to insure that all was well following a late afternoon parent meeting. She ended our conversation with a quick check on me personally. It is refreshing to be uplifted in support by thoughtful and  caring colleagues as well. Thanks for seeking communication regarding your student and supporting the continued needs of the family.
Sara Pardeck took on the task of entertaining an office full of children after school. She made some new friends, one being Brody Collins. I appreciated your support when I was busy being a Principal and not a parent. You are a Rockstar in our eyes!!!
Remember, I will be out most of the day tomorrow. I will start the day at CRE for an 8:00 parent meeting and then be in administrative meetings for the bulk of the day. Call, text, or email if a need should arise.
