CRE Family News

The Veteran’s Day assembly was received as the touching tribute to those in attendance. Servicemen and Veteran’s shared their gratitude and our extension of patriotism to them. Thank you again, Mrs. Hazell for your efforts to organize the assembly. Thank you, classroom teachers for your efforts to prepare your students as participants. Our guests were touched and as an intended outcome so were our students. This will be a memorable learning experience for our students to pull from as they embark on their journey as a patriot.  It is a necessary, now more than ever, that we look for ways to embed opportunities for our students to learn and model patriotism in the school setting. Thank you CRE for your support!

There is a lot of LIFE happening all around our CRE Family these days. Please continue to be an encourager to your peers. There are so many factors that are out of our control but reaching out with a kind word, hug,  note, etc may be all that person needs to face the day with a renewed spirit. This is what we are good at and it is time to rely on our strengths. #CREfamily

Artisan Themes

All good teachers should be utilizing the six fundamental Artisan Teaching themes (Clear Learning Goals, Congruency, Task Analysis, Diagnosis, Overt Responses, and Mid-Course Corrections). These are all necessary strengths teachers must possess or be able to do to promote high levels of student understanding. These themes are the “essence” of what quality instruction should include.

Task Analysis – The ability of the teacher to identify and sequence all the essential steps necessary for mastery of a learning goal. It is not just the activities but the actual breaking down of content into steps where strategies and skills that are taught can be practiced and learned.

The application of skill in this particular area goes back to planning and follow through. There is strong evidence to support a strong link between standards and the task put before students. Again, the learning goal must first be identified, but access to information in a sequential format will enable learners to grasp new information and apply it with confidence.

I observed a solid example of task analysis in Ms. Schisler’s class recently. She did a beautiful job of sequencing the skills in advance to allow her students to ease into the expected task successfully. She was able to reference prior learning, anchor charts, stamina, etc. as precursors to their next step in their learning journey.

Literacy

Reading Strategy cards

Much like our efforts and purpose behind PBIS we are making a conscious effort to further unify our literacy language. The strategy cards will help to streamline our language between classroom, intervention, and support services.  Clear, consistent language is the goal to helping our striving readers to accelerate. Think of how powerful this consistent language will be in helping our students who have three layers of instruction and already tangled in their learning.  This supports everything at the CRE Core: partnerships, problem-solving, professional, and purposeful.  Win, win!!

Thank you for subtle shifts like this that can result in exponential growth for our learners. Pebbles can become rocks and rocks can become boulders. This is easy to remove from the roadway.

Building Updates

We will have guests in the building after school on 11/16 from 4:15-5:15 attending the TOP meeting with Mrs. Brown in the cafeteria. This would be a time for us to make our staff kiddos aware of the meeting location.

Office Info

Evelyn has been sharing your updated budget in a google doc. This will allow you to have access to your updated account balances at all times.

Instructional Spotlights

Instructionally we have come along ways in our literacy instruction. Having a broad lens and the opportunity to observe instruction and instructional artifacts in every room lends itself to an overall reflection of growth.

Small group reading instruction was a focus of professional growth that has taken hold across the board. The intentionality observed and delivered in a small group reading moment is commendable. There is a sense of protection and understanding that the moment of direct teaching at the student’s level is our shared commitment.

Co-constructed anchor charts is an example of an instructional artifact that has been our focus in the past. This component of the literacy model is a solid example of accessibilty to learning new content. Students are often observed referencing or directed to reference anchor charts to support their application of learning needs.

The Reader’s Notebooks have been a reoccurring theme for us as a building since the word GO! It is refreshing to see the use of the RN in support of student growth in both reading and writing. There is strong evidence of our faculties commitment to providing students with consistent opportunities to respond to their reading as well as ample opportunity to practice their language and writing skills.

Here we are working on refining our language, spelling and grammar instructional practices. The possibilities are endless when this team sets their mind on a professional goal.

This brief summary serves as a form of communication to let you all know your efforts do not go unnoticed. Additionally, the real work happens when we attempt to keep all plates spinning in unison. We continue to use the visual of a Road Map this school year when addressing learning through the student lens. We are learning that many pebbles, rocks, and sometimes boulders are obstacles we can work together to remove. I challenge you to bring your best efforts to your craft each day, this gig is not easy and it is taxing but it IS worth it!

Please reach out when you feel the sinking feeling as we continue to evaluate the “teacher’s plate.” Thank you for your professionalism, commitment, and drive to best serve students.

Kim Gillman Rocks!!! I have been trying to get answers to a question about enVision for a homebound student for 2 weeks and no one has been able to help me. I called Kim this morning and she not only answered my question but gave me a better solution to my issues. ~ Maggie Martinez

Ms. Brummel has been a great support for the learner’s in Mrs. Mosley’s class during Whitney’s absence. Way to come through as a friend and team member when it matters. Thank you for being a great support to our subs and helping them with all the in’s and out’s that impact the learning outcomes of students.

Mrs. Miller has also been supporting the needs of our guest teachers with extra efforts before, during and after the school day. We will be thrilled when our team is back in action but until then the team approach and support are appreciated more than you know. Thank you, Mrs. Miller.

Mrs. Engel has been called on to support a number of needs in the building. Not only has she done an excellent job preparing Mrs. Keithley to run a classroom with high expectations in her absence but she has responded with a gracious “can do” attitude. The extra that is ask is not always convenient but her approach to responded when a need has been presented is appreciated.

Ms. Pardeck didn’t let a  little bus break down deter her from enjoying the day with her students. Thank you for your sense of humor and “roll with it” personality that supported your kiddos and coworkers in the moment. Who doesn’t want to be broke down on a bus with Ms. Pardeck??? PAAARRTTTYY!!!

Ms. Halbrook was a source of steady, problem-solving in the moment on the 2nd grade field trip. I appreciate her modeling decisiveness and a sense of humor when experiencing challenging obstacles. No worries…all students were safe, enjoyed their day, and ate lunch…Thank you, Ms. Halbrook!

Ellie Brubaker shined as a champion for kids in the PST conversations this week. Her approach to learning needs, barriers, and whole child support are all commendable characteristics of committed educator.

Cara Rittman demonstrates her pulse on student learning growth in all settings. Her knowledge and specifics on individual students in intervention was impressive. She is often the liaison and can share student dynamics from a small group setting. Additonally, her knowledge of systems and processes is helpful in those decision making moments. Nicely done, Mrs. Rittman.

Mr. Beasley doesn’t even know the impact he has on students. His name came up repeatedly as a support to students in the PST process. This was a direct reflection of his intentional actions to connect with kids and serve as the positive role model we all need. So grateful for your presence, Mr. B.

Instructional Spotlight

Mrs. Hughes (1st) had clear learning goals posted to guide her young learners. Her intentional efforts to prep for the day will reap great rewards in maintaining a learning focus throughout the year.

Having a point of reference for students and an opportunity for the teacher to, explicitly share the learning goals for the day is a fundamental expectations for all classrooms.

Mrs. Poor had an anchor chart detailing the expectations of the teacher and students. This activity with students sure reinforced their sense of belonging, worth, and role as a student. This is an invaluable way to infuse student voice into daily teaching and learning behaviors.

The 1st grade walk through was a great opportunity to observe classroom learning in motion. Classes were well underway as instruction had begun, promptly. (Lekar) Additional takeaways were:

  • manipulatives were out and in student’s hands for use in learning (Engel/Ball)
  • 1st graders were learning and practicing greetings (Poor/Arjes)
  • Pirate High 5’s were used as positive reinforcers (Lee)
  • reading groups were underway (Lee)
  • students were practicing read to self and writer’s workshop and teacher was circulating to reinforce quality learning experiences(Oxenreider/Scroggins)

Reminders and clarifications as we learn this new system:
Please be sure to log absences into willSub when you know you are going to be absent from work. This helps us ensurethe system will immediately send out for subs to cover. Remember, if the need for a long term sub arises (maternity,
illness, etc.), please do not put into the system. Instead come see me and we will work with Maggie to input this as a prearranged absence(s).

There is not a 1/4 day option so you will have to note that in the administrator note area when submitting a leave request. The adjustment will be made for payroll purposes when processed.  Feedback is encouraged as we want the system to work well.  Twenty additional subs have been trained. Yahoo! PBIS Update
All classes have now been introduced to the Pirate High 5. Please be actively recognizing student behaviors with use of pirate high 5’s and the class High 5, when applicable. Let’s double down on our building PBIS and Pirate High 5 language as we get into full swing here at CRE. Students are responding, beautifully to the Pirate High 5 expectations already. Greetings are evident in all settings and students are gaining confidence with the support from the classroom lessons, class meetings, and positive reinforcements.
Office Updates
As we get closer to reaching our start time goal with all students in class by 8:45, please be diligent in taking attendance by 9:30. The automated calls go out at 10:00 and it is difficult to host conversations with parents when their child is in attendance but they may have received a call. This task is tedious and takes your focused attention, I realize this is hard to manage with the business of the morning. Thank you for your help in accounting for all students, accurately.
NWEA
As announced at our faculty meeting, we will not be NWEA testing this fall. Instead, we will utilize and focus upon last spring’s NWEA scores to create intervention groups. This is a pilot year as we will analyze how this practice goes. This also provides additional classroom teaching minutes which goes right with our goal to preserve this most valuable time.
We started NWEA Language testing for 2nd and 3rd today. As a reminder NWEA scores are available the next day. You are encouraged to run your class report and use for instructional planning.
Mr. Beasley is calling classrooms for new 2nd and 3rd graders and going to retrieve 1st graders. Thank you for your flexibility as we work to get all students tested in a timely manner.
Class Schedules
As a reminder class schedules are due to Mrs. Brown on Friday, Aug. 25th. Please have schedules posted outside your classroom by this date as well.

Ms. Helms did a nice job hosting an impromptu parent meeting. She was shoulders down, student focused, and helped us arrive at a positive outcome. Thank you for your efforts to communicate with all parties before, during and after the meeting. Go team!

Mrs. Harris did a great job facilitating the PBIS team meeting today. This dynamic team is action oriented and has taken charge with leading our building in the Pirate High 5.

Ms. Pardeck is fostering a safe environment for students to share new learning from their read to self time. She is a master in building community and capacity in her classroom. Her language regarding strong speaking and listening skills was spot on.

Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together. - James Cash Penney
I am excited to continue our momentum as you have proven to be a powerful force. CRE staff is extraordinary in all that you do. Connections, relationships, teacher influence, and student growth do not happen by chance. It is intentional, strategic and organic all at the same time. Celebrate the strengths within your team and highlight the areas that we all seek to improve and together we will find rhythm and power in the day to day teaching and learning behaviors.
“Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice.”― James C. Collins

NWEA

After some discussion this year we will not be administering NWEA in the Fall, except to new students. We will pilot this “no testing in the Fall” this year and address outcomes as we move forward. This would allow us to jump quickly back into instruction and allow us to begin to look at spring to spring data instead of fall to spring.  We all know how much students drop when they first return….this will hopefully alleviate the drop in score and focus on how they do when they jump back in to instruction.

New students entering the district will be assessed when they enter the district to ensure we have a baseline for those students. More to come…
A schedule will be coming soon but you may want to plug the following info into your plans.
* Aug. 22nd 2nd/3rd NWEA Language testing
* Aug. 22nd begin new student testing and continue into Wed. Aug. 23rd as needed
* Aug. 23rd 1st, 2nd, 3rd please begin procedures with Reader’s and Writer’s workshop, if not already in progress
* Aug. 25th classroom schedules posted outside classroom and shared with Michelle Brown who will distribute to office, interventionists, etc.
Instruction
Use this tool to guide your schedule planning for the 2017-18 school year. Take note that we are slightly below the DESE recommendation in writing. Additionally, you need to consider cross curricular minutes as each content area is is not a silo. We will continue to work toward units of study in SS and Science that will help us find a balance of instructional time.

Summer Shout Out

Hey Gang!!! Hope you are enjoying vacation mode, unscheduled fun, and lots of down time. We had a great article club meeting a few weeks ago and shared some great learning and reconnecting for our common purpose. Summer school is nearing an end over at CRP and we are enjoying summer workdays as we check off our Summer To Do’s.

CRE Family News

We are excited to announce new team members who will be joining our CRE Family. Jessica Farmer joins us as a paraprofessional and begins her #piretelife with CRE in the fall. Kristina Kosiorek will gift our team with experience as she joins the pirate ranks in August as a paraprofessional as well. Brandi Gifford will be our new special education team member setting sail from room 600 this year. Look for an opportunity to connect and welcome our new crew members.

Additionally, we announced prior to the end of the school year that Jennifer Rice will begin her pirate journey as our full time Art teacher and Jamey Derks will be continuing her #piratelife here at CRE as our full time music teacher.

Thomas update: Thomas has enrolled in on line courses at OTC. Way to go, Thomas!

Building Update

New student enrollment will be managed by our counseling department beginning this fall. Mrs. Grisham will do a fantastic job as the face of CRE when welcoming new families to our district. Evelyn and Maggie will be supporting this transition as needed so that each office continues to operate smoothly.

Our custodial staff have been working hard, once again, and have succeeded in working ahead of schedule in building cleaning. The building still needs to be in a holding pattern for the remainder of the June, unless you need brief access to your classroom.

Communication

Many of you get questions during the summer so I am sharing the welcome back letter for informational purposes only. This letter will be going out to all returning students. Please don’t share this letter as the mailing will take place late in the day on June 28th. Parents will also be receiving additional information to prepare for back to school season.

WELCOME BACK LETTER 2017-18

Character Theme

As a reminder we are going with a Pirate theme for the 2017-18 school year. We encourage you to follow our #piratelife hashtag and connect with our CRE story on social media. If you are not already following CRE on twitter and facebook please connect and send your highlights to me to share with our school families. Help us share the great happenings that take place here at CRE.

MAP Data

Preliminary MAP data is in and I am anxious to share it with our CRE team. This data reflects the complexity in our foundation based curriculum and each faculty members role in preparing our students for their testing success in 3rd grade.
This data is preliminary at this time and will remain preliminary until the Fall.  It does not include MAP-A students and has not taken out our ELL students that did not have to test.  These small changes can make the data go up and down.
 ELA Spring 2017 Percent Prof/Advanced
Cedar Ridge 3rd 64.84%
Math Spring 2017 Percent Prof/Advanced
Cedar Ridge 3rd 63.06%
Team, this is data to be proud of…our students worked hard and gave us their very best. The potential for our students and staff to continue to yield positive outcomes for learning is limitless. Thank you is not enough but it is heartfelt all the same when I say your effort, good work, and competence are noticed and celebrated!!!

Jacki Lee,  Sara Pardeck, and Ginger Conner are investing some summer time researching and planning opportunities to explore more project based learning with students. It is inspiring to be apart of their continued learning journey as they seek to embed research based learning experiences that pair nicely with our district’s vision for learner outcomes. I am grateful for their open approach to district direction and desire to grow student creativity and the love of learning between teacher and student.
It has been a pleasure to spend a few minutes connecting with Brandi Gifford, Jessica Farmer, and Kristina Kiorsek. They each came in to connect a spend a few minutes of their summer here at CRE. We are looking forward to welcoming our new team members.
Jennifer Franks and Jennifer Arjes both took the time to communicate information necessary in student placement needs. They were each thorough, student focused, and genuine in their approach to supporting as needed. Thank you for your time, ladies!

CRE Family News

For those of you who were at the Primary a few years ago, you may remember Sebastian and his struggles with neuro blastoma. Sebastian is Angie Adam’s (night custodian) grandson and Bubble’s (kitchen team member) great grandson. Sebastian has been fighting cancer since he was diagnosed at 5 weeks old. The good news is… he was just cleared to go to 1 yr. check ups because the cancer hormone is no longer in his system. This is a huge celebration for their family! #heroesintraining

Miscellaneous

The plan was to hold students in the gym to review routines; however students responded to the whistle without hesitation therefore that was our sign that training was not necessary. Scratch that…although a great idea, Mr. Helsel.

Marta Nangle has done an outstanding job of digging into lunch duty. No matter the task, Marta gives 110% and then some. I appreciate her dedication to the job, even those duties that may be less than glamorous but so vital to a successful school day for our students.

Mr. Beasley has also been awarded the title,  “lunch duty superhero” ! He was strategic in making shifts to better accommodate seating and the challenge of our cafeteria flow. Sure appreciate his ” can do attitude”and desire to solidify systems of management.

Dian Burge, again came in to the cafeteria with a game plan to model and train students. She is a breath of fresh air, as she genuinely enjoys her interactions with students in all settings. Dian is so pleasant and always leads with a smile.

CRE Family News

We continue to keep Dana Maple and her family close at heart and in our prayers as her dad’s condition is serious. Her school family can be a resource of support and an outlet when she needs to return and clear her mind.

Relay for Life

As a reminder our Branson Pirate Relay for Life team is hosting our annual fundraiser. Pay $2 to wear jeans on Wednesdays until the end of the year. Money can be paid to Kendra McCormick and goes toward our team fundraising efforts to find a cure for this disease that effects so many lives. Thank you for your support. When you pay you will receive a sticker to wear in support of Relay for Life.

Growth Mindset

Mrs. Brown prepared a great discussion topic centered around a growth mindset. It was a refreshing to dig into material that is easy to apply, immediately. “This may take some time” to become a part of everyday conversations but “I will learn how to do this.” I really connected with the topic with my home language. I can think of numerous times where I have categorized my children’s strengths.

Here is a simple chart to support both a change in your language and your student’s.

NWEA

There is often questions surrounding how NWEA establishes the student RIT goals. I am sharing a brief excerpt from the 2015 NWEA Normative Data document. I believe this paragraph both affirms some our theories and also sheds light on the “how and why.”

If you are interested in further investigation let me know and I can direct you to the appropriate information.

“Growth norms developed for the 2015 RIT Scale Norms Study reflect the common observation that the rate of academic growth is related to the student’s starting status on the measurement scale; typically, students starting out at a lower level tend to grow more. The growth norm tables below show mean growth when the mean grade level status score is used as the starting score. In each case, the starting score is treated as a factor predicting growth. If a particular student’s starting score was below the grade level status mean, the growth mean is typically higher. Similarly, students with starting scores above the grade level mean would typically show less growth on average. This procedure, coupled with the inclusion of instructional days in computing the norms, results in a highly flexible and better contextualized reference for understanding MAP RIT scores.”

McTeacher Night

CRE McTeacher Night is scheduled for Jan. 20th. The sign up is on the lounge door and we are need more CRE representatives. I will purchase a meal for those who sign up to attend and fill the slots for each hour.

 CRE Parent Math Night
The planning committee met yesterday and elected to push the date back a bit. We will host CRE Math Night Feb. 23rd from 6:00-7:00 pm. . The evening will go as follows:
6:00-6:15 whole group presentation in gym with Dr. Collins, Mr. Allen, Mrs. Thompson, etc.
6:15-6:25 transition to classroom sessions
6:25-6:55 enVision Math Lesson Overview in classrooms
6:55 all call to conclude the event
6:55-7:00 Treats available to go as guests leave in the entryway
* times are an estimate and we will use the intercom to move the evening along
Teachers will be facilitating the enVision lessons as this event is in place to help parents better navigate math resources and understand the multi level instructional process.
The flyer will indicate that this is a parent (informational) event, but for the children who do come we will have staff available to supervise them in the gym.
Pizza will be provided for staff participating in the event.
This is not mandatory, but substantial participation is necessary to create a successful event.
Grade reps will lead communication about participating and roles.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Barbara Head is a gift of knowledge for our district. She is also a pleasant face at CRE and we are lucky she calls CRE home!!! Thank you for your service to our students and staff.

NWEA

Fall NWEA Reports will be shared at P/T Conferences. Please have the reports printed and ready to share with parents at that time. The reports will need explanation and conversation to set the stage for the student’s growth continuum from fall to spring. Thank you for your attention to this request for clear and uniformed communication.

It is always refreshing to hear the student centered learning opportunities happening in Ms. Lee’s classroom. I am excited to see how her students respond to project based learning and the return on engagement. Jacki is a masterful educator and we are blessed to have here at CRE. #aimhighCRE

I am so proud of Ms. Brummel and her focus on rigor and grit as a professional. She is taking on new learning and identifying with the needs of students who need more from us. Super impressed with her learning curve and desire to serve.

Bill Christenson is such a treat to share school with. I treasure quick conversation where I can learn more about him as a person. What a gift he is to our team! Thanks for the pop in’s, Bill.

Bill Ashfield is such a great fit for our team. His calm demeanor, take care of kids mentality, and genuine smile sure make him a strong leader here at CRE. Thank you, Bill for your dedication, hard work, and heart.

Reminders:

Be on time.

Students need to take a book for when then finish.

For math- students need a piece of scratch paper and pencil.
Goal Setting: Involve your students in the value of the testing process by offering them the opportunity to set goals, review last years score, etc.
I look forward to highlighting goal setting exercises that you field were beneficial for Fall testing.

Attendance

It is that time to share trends in attendance concerns that may already be evident. I would like to be proactive and set us up for clear communication with families early. If you are recognizing concerns with transportation or attendance let’s take the following course of action:

1. please begin with making contact as the classroom teacher

2.  if the concern continues then refer it to a counselor to follow up

3.  and from there I will be become a part of the problem solving efforts

Remember you can use the parent contact tab in SIS to document.

Thank you in advance as we leverage each contact as a means to build capacity, trust, and open lines of communication to HELP the child.

Stephanie Peterson has been extremely diligent in covering the needs of her three students. This is a challenge and her extra efforts have been noticed by colleagues. She is digging in and figuring it out. Thank you Stephanie for choosing CRE. #aimhighCRE

You can sure see what experience looks like when you see Trisha Highfill in action. She is at the pulse of SPED needs and being on your toes. I appreciate the level of competency and confidence she models in her daily interactions. Thanks for showing up and giving 110% each day.

Amanda Gratton is gaining ground with her third graders in the morning. I appreciate her eagle eye on the students she is serving. It is encouraging to see the attention to detail, care, and focus from a new team member. Glad you are here, Amanda.

I think we can say the Nurse Leigh Ann is rocking it for us here at CRE! Way to be ON IT!!! I see evidence of building relationships with students, parents, and staff. We are thrilled to have you lead our healthcare needs here at CRE.

Marta Nangle has run herself into the ground trying to help us keep up with new enrollment. She is so skilled at tying up loose ends and meeting families where they are to set them up for a successful school year. I wish I had her skill set but I am grateful for her in the moment to be the voice of CRE. She represents us all in such a positive and professional manner. #aimhighCRE

Julie Ipock has done a tremendous job leading our building as the PBIS coach. She is ready with agendas, speedy with prioritizing, and clear in her delivery. This is certainly putting us on the map for solidifying and refining practices that will take us from GOOD to GREAT. Way to go, Julie!

When asked how it is going, Ginger Conner’s feedback has been nothing but positive. I enjoy so much to hear the love and care that is already taking shape with her kids. Ginger really has a peaceful demeanor that supports her learners right where they are.

Jessica Hughes is really showing her grit in the day to day care of students. I know she must need something, but her class has been well managed and she has been completely engaged each time I have observed. Welcome to the team, Jessica! Your high expectations are certainly a good fit here at CRE.
